"Byways" — photography by Janet MacCausland, August 8 through 22

  True Grit Art Gallery is pleased to present Byways, a solo exhibition of photographs by local artist Janet MacCausland.
  
  A naturalist and photographer with a strong fine art background, MacCausland creates modern images that carry a classic, timeless quality. Inspired by the work of Edward Weston, Richard Avedon, Jerry Uelsmann, Georgia O’Keeffe, Imogen Cunningham, and her own father—who first introduced her to the black-and-white darkroom at age 15—she brings a quiet, observant eye to the natural world and the environments she encounters while traveling Drawing on extensive time spent outdoors and traveling by RV throughout North America, MacCausland focuses on capturing crucial moments, expressions, and angles of light. Her photographs offer viewers a chance to pause and reconnect with beauty amid the noise of everyday life. As she writes in her artist statement, photography allows us “to rest our eyes on beauty unfolding despite our complicated lives.”

  MacCausland holds a BFA from Moore College of Art, where she graduated at the top of her class, and has also studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, Massachusetts College of Art, and the Boston School of Photography. After a career as a garment designer and needlepoint artist, she returned to her first love of photography. Her patient and persistent approach in the field has earned her recognition from the National Association of Nature Photographers of America, the International Color Awards, Audubon’s “Share the View,” and others. Her work has been published in National Geographic Books, the Boston Globe, the Cape Cod Standard Times, and multiple annual “Showcase” publications.

Opening Reception

We warmly invite you to join us for the Opening Reception on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the artist and experience the full collection in person. Light refreshments will be served.

Please note: On Saturday, August 8, the gallery will be closed during regular business hours and will open exclusively for the reception from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The exhibition remains on view through Saturday, August 22, 2026.
