Initially I welcomed the quarantine as an endless time to paint; a luxury I never afforded myself. Quickly, with endless news of world-wide suffering, the excitement of all that extra painting time soon developed into a depression and ennui. Unsurprisingly, I found myself disillusioned with my art and dissatisfied with my creative output.
Out of frustration I began to rework several of my unsuccessful paintings by completely covering them with Mars black paint. (I was definitely in a dispirited, black cloud kind of mood.) In my usual technique I then began wiping off some of the paint and adding some paint back onto my works without any direction whatsoever, but with much amusement.
Hope grew with this method, for I soon discovered that within these pieces, I began to reconnect with my creative spirit! Despite these difficult times, what continues to be important to me as an artist is how the paint, colors and the technique I use to create these shapes interact with each other as these paintings over paintings emerged.
During the time of Covid, I found it necessary to shut off all my worries about world-wide suffering in order to achieve any kind of success
