Not long before my 65th birthday, the Stay At Home Advisory hit. Once I accepted the reality of the quarantine, I still continued my art practice creating one small floral painting each day. This habit helped stabilized me during the days of uncertainty and upheaval.
On my birthday, a miraculous gift from my daughter arrived; a stunning double bouquet of flowers. Just as I was feeling down and frightened, a bright and beautiful explosion of color, life, and love came to my door. And I wanted to capture the release of positive energy it embodied for me at that moment. A series of larger experimental paintings was born: Lockdown/Breakout.
Everything is everything, a wise friend tells me. A flower is not just a flower. It is every flower, everyone. The flower’s life, disintegration, and rebirth are ours as well. This series expressed all this for me while “life as usual” was on standby.
