Picture
On Saturday, October 24th, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm, True Grit Art Gallery will host an opening reception to launch a solo exhibit by a very talented local artist. “The Assemblage Art of L.E.Ashley” features fine artworks by Middleboro resident Lori Ashley meticulously crafted by combining small, exquisite oil paintings of abandoned area buildings, local landscapes, and animals with found objects such as antique wood and other odds and ends. She also works with old photographs.
Lori grew up in Middleborough. She studied painting under Middleborough's Leland Smith in the 1980s, and obtained a degree in Illustration from UMass Dartmouth. Passionate about the deep history flowing through Massachusetts, she gravitated to adding found objects and antique architectural elements to her assemblage art, using them to surround her focal point of a small oil painting or an antique photograph. Her pieces are mostly miniatures, designed to draw the viewer in for a very personal, nostalgic, and sometimes bittersweet experience. Lori can usually be found with her eyes to the ground looking for materials, or out in the cemeteries or wooded trails of Middleborough, breathing in the antiquity and feel of the area for inspiration.
The gallery invites the public to come and meet this extraordinary local talent and view her works while enjoying complimentary single- serve, sealed refreshments. Face coverings are required and social distancing will be observed. This event is free and open to the public. The show is on view from its opening night through November 21st.
True Grit Art Gallery is located at 38 Center St in Middleboro MA. Regular gallery hours are Tuesdays 11am - 4pm, Wednesday thru Fridays 10am-5pm, and Saturdays from 10am - 3pm. The gallery hosts bi-monthly special exhibits but also boasts a myriad of original artworks from regularly represented local and regional artists.

On Saturday, Sep 19th, beginning at 5:00pm, True Grit Art Gallery will host a staggered  opening for a solo art exhibition from Blackstone, MA artist Mike Perron entitled ‘Where We Were— Paintings From Before Now’ . In accordance with social distancing guidelines, and in order to limit the number of occupants at one time, the gallery requests that attendees reserve spots to attend the event during one of three spaced 50-minute intervals throughout the evening. Attendees can reserve their spots at here or by calling the gallery at 774-419-4160. Attendees will enjoy complimentary wine, beer, snacks and hear from the artist himself as he speaks about his paintings and the experiences that inspired them.    Mike Perron is a special educator and part-time art instructor teaching oil painting techniques to teens at Hunakai Studio in Foxboro, MA. Mike has trained in myriad of pursuits including painting and drawing, sculpture, furniture design, ceramics, metal work, and stained glass. “To me, art speaks to a culture, it tells a story of where we are, and where we have come from, perhaps imagining where we are going to be.” says Mike. Channeling Proust, he exclaims, “I have found that a color or an object can sometimes transport our imaginations to where we have been. A certain color can remind me of a glass I used to drink from on a warm summer day, or the hazy sun on a picture plane might trigger a specific memory of a trip to the beach with my pepere as a child.”

‘Where We Were— Paintings From Before Now”’ is on view from it’s opening night of  Sep 19th through Oct 10th.

Google Doodle, Veterans Day 2019

11/13/2019

Picture
Some of you may have recognized the style of artwork depicted in the company logo of Google's homepage this past November 11th— Veterans Day! Well, it may be because gallery co-owner and represented artist Peter Damon was commissioned to paint it. We were so excited and honored to be a part of celebrating  this special day. Some of you may know that Pete is a retired disabled Vet of the Iraq War, 2003. Art played a major part in his recovery and continues to be his passion. Google is known for marking special dates and  occasions with stylized, illustrated versions of their logo called Google Doodles. The Doodle's reach, depending on the occasion and its relevance worldwide is massive.  Google receives over 63,000 searches per second on any given day. That's the average figure of how many people use Google a day, which translates into at least 2 trillion searches per year, 3.8 million searches per minute, 228 million searches per hour, and 5.6 billion searches per day. Again, those are the worldwide figures. We tried to get the figures for just the USA, but were unlucky in that respect. Whatever the case, it's a huge number! Read more about Pete's thoughts on the Doodle here.

Journeys: Studio & Plein Air Paintings by Betsy Payne Cook — Sep 7 through 28

Picture
On Saturday, September 7th, from 6:00pm until 8:30pm, True Grit Art Gallery will host an opening reception to launch ‘Journeys: Studio & Plein Air Paintings’ by noted Cape Cod artist Betsy Payne Cook. Betsy paints exclusively with pastels. She is a Juried Associate Member of the prestigious Pastel Society of America, a signature member of the Pastel Painters  Society of Cape Cod, and a Juried Master Artist at the Cape Cod Art Association. Betsy is on the faculty of  the Falmouth Arts Center, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, and Sandwich Arts Alliance where she teaches pastel and plein air (outdoor) painting classes and workshops.  Betsy also organizes her own local and destination plein air classes and workshops. The success of her  travel painting workshop to Wales, has led her to partner with Renegade Travels to plan a Painter's Retreat in Italy for the spring of 2020.

“A journey can happen just outside my doorway or send me to a destination far from home.  I paint locations that invite me to stay awhile, turning the ordinary into a painting. The journey also happens in the moments that I am painting; taking my time to explore the nuances of the scene, the light and color, what may be hidden in the shadows. I seek out a thought, a story for myself and one I can share with the viewer.
This collection of ‘Journeys’ was painted both on location, en plein air (outdoors), or in my studio. These paintings transport you to Cape Cod, through New England, New York and to Nova Scotia; from sandy dunes to mountains, from harbors and small towns to isolated landscapes. A little bit of me comes back with each place I visit.’’
— Betsy Payne Cook

Alison DeArruda- "Since earning my degree in Illustration from UMass Dartmouth in 2013, I’ve taken more of a fine art approach with my work while still incorporating some illustrative qualities. I paint an array of subject matter including landscapes, sea life, the human form, and introspective abstract pieces. My creative goal is to intuitively observe life and to capture the essence of the moment."

Picture
Michael Zimmermann- "Making art brings me satisfaction, enjoyment, and a sense of vocation; it's something that centers me. I'm a fan of painterly realism.
Favorite artists are too many to say, but Chardin, Wayne Thibeault and other great still-life painters inspire me. I am currently following Sherrie McGraw and David Leffel on their livestream, and Paul Foxton on his blog. Lately I've been dropping in on local teachers."

"Whether real or imagined in an expressionistic or abstract style, I characterize my work as explorations in paint, aspiring to make a connection with my creative spirit. What is important is how the actual paint, colors and the manner in which shapes I create interact with the techniques and styles I am exploring. Using oil paints and most often just working with a palette knife I am searching for the essence of a place." - Missy Riley

'Contemporaries' — a dual exhibition of modern-style paintings by Laurel Christie and Nada Jaber
Sep 8 through Sep 29

On Saturday, Sep 8th, from 6:00pm until 8:30pm, True Grit Art Gallery will host an opening reception for an exciting new exhibit featuring two talented local artists known for their modern, contemporary styles. The exhibit, entitled ‘Contemporaries’, features recent paintings by South Shore artist Laurel Christie and Rockland artist Nada Jaber. Laurel Christie’s work spans from intensely colored and energetic, abstract expressionism to more subdued and insightful, surrealist-like artworks. Nada Jaber explores transcendental themes using a variety of mediums, sometimes incorporating collage, while also bridging realms with more representational and semi-abstract pieces. The gallery invites the public to come and meet these two great, local talents and view their works while enjoying complimentary refreshments. There is no cost to attend. This exhibit runs from its opening night of Sep 8 through Sep 29th.
Picture
Laurel Christie is an award-winning contemporary artist from Southeastern MA. She is a graduate of the Art Institute of Boston and worked briefly in editorial illustration before pursuing fine art painting completely. She has won numerous awards throughout the New England area and is a member of the South Shore Art Center in Cohassett, MA . She continues to explore differing art styles and mediums using unexpected "tools" such as sticks, shells, and leaves (things from nature) to create new works.
    "
The body of work represented here is an exploration into the beginning: subconscious, our childhood bonds and then breaks from the integral figures in our lives, to the imagining of Self and our relation to our perceptions of the world in which we live." - Laurel Christie

Picture
Nada Jaber recently became a US citizen. She emigrated to this country from Aley, Lebanon. Nada earned a Masters degree in nutrition and dietetics from the American University of Beirut but is also a very passionate painter. Speaking about her passion for art, she states, "I was first introduced to the art of painting in middle school, and I fell in love with the power of color and shape. Unfortunately however, I never really had the chance to pursue this passion, until much later in life. At the age of 40, when I returned back home, I was lucky to study painting with one of the most famous abstract artists in Lebanon, Mr. Hassan Yateem. Not only did I get to learn the basics of light and shade, colors, and composition. I also learned that in art, there is really no right and wrong; that art is this one space, where as long as you feel good about something, it is good.
Since then, I started experimenting with different styles and different media in my work. I always challenge myself to come up with creative ideas. So far, I prefer not sticking to any one style in painting. Instead, I rely on my feelings; and the idea of a project keeps turning in the background in my brain day and night, until I see it in my head, and I put it on canvas."- Nada Jaber
