'Contemporaries' — a dual exhibition of modern-style paintings by Laurel Christie and Nada Jaber
Sep 8 through Sep 29

On Saturday, Sep 8th, from 6:00pm until 8:30pm, True Grit Art Gallery will host an opening reception for an exciting new exhibit featuring two talented local artists known for their modern, contemporary styles. The exhibit, entitled ‘Contemporaries’, features recent paintings by South Shore artist Laurel Christie and Rockland artist Nada Jaber. Laurel Christie’s work spans from intensely colored and energetic, abstract expressionism to more subdued and insightful, surrealist-like artworks. Nada Jaber explores transcendental themes using a variety of mediums, sometimes incorporating collage, while also bridging realms with more representational and semi-abstract pieces. The gallery invites the public to come and meet these two great, local talents and view their works while enjoying complimentary refreshments. There is no cost to attend. This exhibit runs from its opening night of Sep 8 through Sep 29th.

Laurel Christie is an award-winning contemporary artist from Southeastern MA. She is a graduate of the Art Institute of Boston and worked briefly in editorial illustration before pursuing fine art painting completely. She has won numerous awards throughout the New England area and is a member of the South Shore Art Center in Cohassett, MA . She continues to explore differing art styles and mediums using unexpected "tools" such as sticks, shells, and leaves (things from nature) to create new works.
    "
The body of work represented here is an exploration into the beginning: subconscious, our childhood bonds and then breaks from the integral figures in our lives, to the imagining of Self and our relation to our perceptions of the world in which we live." - Laurel Christie

Nada Jaber recently became a US citizen. She emigrated to this country from Aley, Lebanon. Nada earned a Masters degree in nutrition and dietetics from the American University of Beirut but is also a very passionate painter. Speaking about her passion for art, she states, "I was first introduced to the art of painting in middle school, and I fell in love with the power of color and shape. Unfortunately however, I never really had the chance to pursue this passion, until much later in life. At the age of 40, when I returned back home, I was lucky to study painting with one of the most famous abstract artists in Lebanon, Mr. Hassan Yateem. Not only did I get to learn the basics of light and shade, colors, and composition. I also learned that in art, there is really no right and wrong; that art is this one space, where as long as you feel good about something, it is good.
Since then, I started experimenting with different styles and different media in my work. I always challenge myself to come up with creative ideas. So far, I prefer not sticking to any one style in painting. Instead, I rely on my feelings; and the idea of a project keeps turning in the background in my brain day and night, until I see it in my head, and I put it on canvas."- Nada Jaber
